LIGHT ON IOWA THEATRICAL DEBUT AT THE ESQUIRE THEATRE; TICKETS ON SALE NOW

Light on IOWA, A Film by Ann Segal, an Intimate Conversation with Renowned Photographer Nancy Rexroth to Benefit the Cincinnati Art Museum’s Rexroth Acquisition

CINCINNATI, OH– July 15, 2021––The Esquire Theatre announces the theatrical debut of Light on IOWA, an intimate conversation with artist Nancy Rexroth by Cincinnati filmmaker Ann Segal on Sunday, September 19, 2021 at 1:00pm. As part of the debut, The Esquire Theatre will host an in-person and virtual panel discussion with filmmaker Ann Segal, photographer Nancy Rexroth, and Nathaniel M. Stein, the Cincinnati Art Museum’s Curator of Photography. Additionally, The Esquire Theatre will screen The Mind of IOWA and The Nancy Rexroth Collection, a film-short produced by the museum, in which esteemed artists, curators, and collectors introduce Rexroth and reflect on the museum’s work to collect, preserve, and fully appreciate her work. The afternoon’s program will illustrate Segal’s unwavering curiosity while revealing Rexroth’s inspiration behind her best-known photographic series, IOWA. The Esquire will contribute a portion of ticket proceeds toward the museum’s ongoing acquisition of Rexroth’s complete archive.

Light on IOWA reveals how summers in the Midwest inspired Rexroth’s visual acuity and unique perceptions about photography. Rexroth found her passion for photography as a student in the 1970s; using a Diana camera, a plastic film camera marketed as a novelty toy in the 1960s, Rexroth captured the small towns and rural homes of Southeast Ohio with artistic depth and unexpected qualities. Rexroth attained her dream-like style through photographic techniques such as soft focus, skewed perspectives, and selectively blurred details.

Following the museum’s 2019 commitment to acquire Rexroth’s complete archive, Ann Segal, who was familiar with Nancy’s work, became interested in making a documentary about her for Fotofocus 2020. Segal’s film, Light on IOWA, captures Rexroth’s inspirations, techniques, and perceptions through an intimate conversation between the two artists. Light on IOWA is the tenth video in the series Conversations with Photographers produced by Segal. To celebrate CAM’s ongoing work to create The Nancy Rexroth Collection, The Esquire Theatre will provide the Cincinnati community with a screening and Q&A session with Nancy, Nathaniel and Ann that promises to be a unique interactive experience. Tickets to the benefit theatrical debut on Sunday, September 19 at 1:00pm are available now online at https://www.esquiretheatre.com/page/15397/LIGHT-ON-IOWA.
